We have camped besides the shores of Lake Winnebago, the largest Lake in Wisconsin. We have dined at Wendt's famous fish restaurant on the Lake where fresh lake perch is the speciality.

But most of all we have enjoyed just getting into the woods and the quiet places that the Americans call the Wilderness. They have an affinity with outdoors and getting back to nature that is somewhat foreign to our 'European' culture. Whole families desert the cities and head for the thousands of lakes and the woods and mountains to enjoy their camp fires, lake swims and mountain trails.
From Wisconsin we headed into the Upper Peninsular of Michigan which borders Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Superior on the other. Staying at lovely State Parks we enjoyed Independence Day over the extreme hot spell that the Eastern and Mid USA has had.
Today we drove to Lake Superior and walked the Porcupine Mountains State Park. Here we are at the summit looking North to Lake Superior in the distance. Lake Superior contains 10% of all the fresh water in the world!
We see lots of deer everywhere and have to be very careful not to hit them when driving.

Tomorrow we head for Minnesota where we will be staying for a couple of weeks or more taking in the wilderness on the doors of the border between the US and Canada. Minnesota is known as the State of 10,000 lakes, all remnants of the last ice age.
